Welcome to Ecuador! Upon arrival at Mariscal Sucre International Airport (UIO), you will be met by our team and transferred to Quito Basecamp, our cozy mountain hostel located in the heart of Quito's historic district. The remainder of the day is free to relax after your international flight, organize your equipment, and begin adjusting to Ecuador's altitude.
Overnight at Quito Basecamp.
Enjoy breakfast before spending a free day discovering Quito, Ecuador's vibrant capital and the first city in the world to be declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
We recommend exploring the beautifully preserved Historic Center (Old Town), where you can visit impressive colonial churches such as La Compañía de Jesús, San Francisco, and the Basilica del Voto Nacional. Stroll through charming plazas, browse local artisan shops, visit one of the city's fascinating museums, or simply enjoy Ecuadorian cuisine at one of the many cafés and restaurants.
This relaxed day also provides valuable altitude acclimatization before beginning your trekking and climbing adventure in the Andes.
Overnight at Quito Basecamp.
Today's adventure takes you to Rucu Pichincha, one of the best acclimatization hikes in Ecuador and an excellent preparation for climbing higher volcanoes such as Cotopaxi and Chimborazo.
After breakfast, make your way to Quito's famous Teleférico, one of the highest cable cars in South America, which ascends from 2,950 m to approximately 4,000 m (13,123 ft) in just a few minutes. From the upper station, begin the scenic hike to the Rucu Pichincha summit (4,696 m / 15,407 ft).
The round-trip hike typically takes 4–6 hours and offers spectacular panoramic views over Quito, the surrounding valleys, and, on clear days, volcanoes including Cotopaxi, Cayambe, Antisana, Iliniza, and Chimborazo.
After returning by cable car, enjoy the evening at leisure in Quito. This trek provides excellent high-altitude acclimatization, helping your body adapt naturally before continuing to Ecuador's higher peaks.
Overnight at Quito Basecamp.
After breakfast, we depart Quito at 8:00 AM for the scenic 3.5-hour drive south along Ecuador's famous Avenue of the Volcanoes to the city of Riobamba, known as Ecuador's mountaineering capital.
Upon arrival at approximately 10:00 AM, you'll meet our team at the Ecuador Eco Adventure office, where we'll complete the necessary paperwork and conduct a comprehensive equipment inspection to ensure you have everything required for your upcoming Chimborazo expedition. Any necessary technical gear will be fitted before departure.
After the gear check, we continue with a 1-hour drive into Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve to Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge (3,900 m / 12,795 ft). Located on the lower slopes of Ecuador's highest mountain, the lodge provides an ideal setting for high-altitude acclimatization while surrounded by breathtaking Andean landscapes.
The remainder of the day is dedicated to rest and acclimatization. You are welcome to take short walks around the lodge, observe wild vicuñas, llamas, alpacas, and native birdlife, or simply relax while enjoying spectacular views of Chimborazo (6,263 m / 20,548 ft). Spending the night at 3,900 meters allows your body to continue adapting naturally to the altitude, increasing your chances of a successful summit attempt in the coming days.
Enjoy a freshly prepared dinner before settling in for a restful night in one of Ecuador's most unique mountain lodges.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner.
After breakfast, we drive approximately 1 hour into the Chimborazo Wildlife Reserve to the Carrel Refuge (4,800 m / 15,748 ft), the starting point for today's acclimatization hike and glacier training.
From the refuge, we begin ascending toward the lower slopes of Chimborazo Glacier, where your ASEGUIM-certified mountain guide will conduct a comprehensive Glacier School. During this practical training session, you'll learn the essential mountaineering techniques required for your summit attempt, including the correct use of crampons, ice axe, harness, helmet, and rope systems, as well as glacier travel, balance on snow and ice, self-arrest techniques, and important mountain safety procedures.
Depending on weather, snow, and glacier conditions, the hike continues to approximately 5,300 m (17,388 ft), providing an excellent opportunity for high-altitude acclimatization while experiencing the unique alpine environment of Ecuador's highest volcano. The dramatic volcanic landscape, permanent glaciers, and panoramic views make this one of the highlights of the expedition.
Today's ascent plays a vital role in preparing your body for the Chimborazo summit climb, allowing you to gain confidence with your technical equipment while continuing the natural acclimatization process before moving to higher elevations.
After completing the training and acclimatization hike, we descend to the vehicle and return to Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge, where a well-deserved lunch awaits. Spend the afternoon relaxing, rehydrating, and recovering before the final stages of your expedition.
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner, and trail snacks.
After lunch at Chimborazo Basecamp (3,900m / 12,795 ft), we drive up to 4,800m (15,748 ft), where we begin a two-hour trek to High Camp at 5,300m (17,388 ft). Upon arrival, we settle into the geodesic dome campsite, where we provide meals and allow time for rest and final preparations. The high-altitude environment here is essential for acclimatization before the summit attempt. At midnight, we begin the ascent toward Chimborazo’s summit (6,263m / 20,549 ft), navigating glaciated terrain under the guidance of our experienced mountaineering team.
Your Chimborazo summit climb begins with a midnight departure from High Camp (5,300 m / 17,388 ft). After a light snack and a final equipment inspection, your ASEGUIM-certified mountain guide will conduct a safety briefing before roping up for the ascent across the glacier.
The climb follows Chimborazo's glaciated slopes, crossing snowfields and moderate glacier terrain while ascending toward Veintimilla Summit (6,230 m) and finally the Whymper Summit (6,263 m / 20,549 ft), the highest point in Ecuador. The ascent typically takes 6–7 hours, depending on weather, snow conditions, and the pace of the team.
Our goal is to reach the summit during the usual summit window between 6:00 AM and 7:30 AM, when mountain conditions are generally at their most stable. Standing on the summit of Chimborazo is a truly unforgettable experience. Although Mount Everest is the world's highest mountain above sea level, Chimborazo's summit is the closest point on Earth to the sun and the farthest point from the center of the Earth, thanks to the planet's equatorial bulge.
From the summit, you'll enjoy spectacular panoramic views of the Ecuadorian Andes, including Carihuairazo, El Altar, Tungurahua, Cotopaxi, and countless surrounding peaks stretching across the Avenue of the Volcanoes.
After celebrating your successful Chimborazo summit and taking time for photographs, we carefully descend back to High Camp, where a well-earned hot breakfast awaits. After a short rest, we continue descending to the Carrel Refuge (4,800 m / 15,748 ft), where our private transportation will be waiting.
From the refuge, we drive back to Chimborazo Basecamp Lodge to collect your luggage before beginning the return journey to Quito, marking the conclusion of an unforgettable mountaineering expedition in Ecuador.
Congratulations on standing atop Chimborazo, Ecuador's highest mountain and one of the world's greatest high-altitude climbing achievements.
Meals: Breakfast and trail snacks.
